India’s commitment to clean energy continues to set new benchmarks, with renewable energy generation expected to reach a record 25 GW by March 2025. Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced that this will be the highest-ever increase in a single year, surpassing the previous record of 18.56 GW achieved in 2023-24. This rapid expansion highlights India’s dedication to sustainable power generation and its mission to transition towards a greener future.
Surging Renewable Energy Capacity
As of February 28, 2025, India has installed a total of 222.86 GW of non-fossil power capacity, demonstrating remarkable progress in clean energy adoption. The breakdown of installed capacity is as follows:
- Solar Power: 102.57 GW
- Wind Power: 48.59 GW
- Bio-Power: 11.45 GW
- Hydro Power: 52.07 GW
- Nuclear Power: 8.18 GW
These renewable sources now account for 47.37% of the country’s total installed power capacity, which stands at 470.45 GW. Solar energy has played a pivotal role in this growth, with an impressive 20.76 GW increase in installed capacity within a year, the highest annual surge to date.
India’s Clean Energy Milestones
Minister Joshi highlighted key achievements in renewable energy expansion:
- 25 GW of new renewable energy capacity in FY25 – a 35% increase from FY24.
- Solar capacity surged by 38%, surpassing the 100 GW milestone.
- Solar module manufacturing nearly doubled, while PV cell production tripled.
- Bio-CNG blending to begin in FY26 to reduce emissions in transport and households.
These milestones solidify India’s leadership in sustainable energy and reinforce its mission to achieve Vikshit Bharat (Developed India) through clean energy initiatives.
PM-Surya Ghar Scheme: Empowering Households with Solar Energy
Under the PM-Surya Ghar (PMSG) scheme, rooftop solar installations have significantly expanded:
- 11.01 lakh households have benefited from rooftop solar installations.
- 3.29 GW of rooftop solar capacity has been added.
- ₹5,437.20 crore disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to 6.98 lakh beneficiaries.
- ₹41,000 crore invested under the PLI Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules, creating 11,650 direct jobs.
The Future of India’s Renewable Energy
With rapid advancements in solar, wind, and bio-energy, India is on track to becoming a global leader in clean energy. The transition towards renewable sources is not only reducing dependence on fossil fuels but also boosting job creation, fostering innovation, and enhancing energy security.
As the nation moves towards a greener economy, initiatives like the PM-Surya Ghar scheme and mandatory biogas blending will play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable energy future. With record-breaking growth and ambitious targets, India’s clean energy revolution is stronger than ever, paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable tomorrow.
